ENDOCARDITIS

Endocarditis is inflammation of endocardium i.e. inner lining of heart. Normally endocarditis caused by an infection, when bacteria, fungi or other germs from other parts of body spread via bloodstream.

If endocarditis not treated initially then it can damage or destroy heart valves.

CAUSES:

The main reason or cause of endocarditis is overgrowth of bacteria. Bacteria can enter inside the body by eating or drinking some contaminated foods and then enter to bloodstream. Some ways germs can enter into body:

Improper dental care

Through an indwelling urinary catheter

Usage of a used syringe

RISK FACTORS:

Some risk factors which can increase the risk to cause endocarditis:

Older age

Artificial heart valves

Having heart defect

Family history

Long-term catheter use

SYMPTOMS:

Common signs are:

Joints and muscle ache

Chest pain during breathing

Pale skin

Murmur sound from heart

Night sweats

Swelling of feet, legs and abdomen

Flu-like symptoms

Some rare symptoms are:

Unexplained weight loss

Blood in urine

Enlarged spleen

Red spots on the soles of feet or palm

PRECAUTION/TREATMENT:

Not all endocarditis can be prevented but some are. Some precautions such as:

Maintain good oral hygiene

Be aware of body’s signs and symptoms

Do not use dirty needles for IV

Maintain a healthy and hygienic lifestyle.
