Preeclampsia is a condition during pregnancy when a women have high blood pressure and possibly protein in their urine. Preeclampsia usually begins after 20 weeks of pregnancy which might be fatal for both mother and baby if left untreated and can damage other organ systems of mother.
Effects Of Preeclampsia On Mother & Baby:
Mother:
If untreated,
Might damage vital organs like kidney, liver and brain.
Also, can cause seizures and strokes.
Baby:
Pre term labour
Placental abruption
Fetal malformation
Risk Factors For Preeclampsia:
History of preeclampsia
Chronic hypertension
Being pregnant for the first time
Being a teen or women over 40
Overweight
Having babies less than 2 years apart or more than 10 years apart
Carrying more than one baby
In-vitro fertilization.
Symptoms:
Severe headache
Blurry vision
Malaise
Nausea or vomiting
Decrease in urine output
Impair liver function
Decrease level of platelets in blood.
Prevention:
If overweight then loose it
If have chronic hypertension then control blood pressure
Avoid smoking and alcohol
Add exercise in routine
Avoid junk food
Drink at least 3ltrs of water
Does Preeclampsia Improve After Delivery?
Generally, after delivery preeclampsia goes away and sometimes lasts for few weeks that require medications. Preeclampsia might be dangerous for those who develop it early in pregnancy, it may cause hypertension and heart disease later in life.
